Resources about the Bible and LGBTQIA+ People

The Bible has often been wielded like a weapon against LGBTQIA+ persons and relationships, so much so that many are triggered or are dismissive of the Bible all together (and for good reason). The resources below are meant to reframe familiar passages and stories in the Bible and to offer better ways of reading the Bible in light of LGBTQIA+ identities.

1946

This documentary film by A Quest for Biblical Truth explores the history of the word “homosexual” in the Bible, showing the agenda and homophobia behind its use and acceptance with Christianity.

Bible, Gender, Sexuality

James V. Brownson takes a fairly academic approach to help change the church’s perspective on queer folks and inclusion. While this is an excellent book, it can be a lot for some.

Changing Our Mind

David Gushee is a well-known Christian ethicist, who made his own journey to acceptance and affirmation. This book represents his biblical and theological as well as his own personal story.

This can be helpful for queer and trans folks as well as their allies, especially those coming from more conservative backgrounds.

God and the Gay Christian

In Matthew Vines’ book, which is part memoir and part biblical exploration, we see the heart of truly committed queer Christian. This book is a great resource for integrating faith and sexual identity.

Gospel of Inclusion

Brandan J Robertson, who some will know from social media, writes an easy-to-read exploration of the inclusive trajectory of the Bible.

Queer Bible Commentary

A collection of essays and commentary that emphasize the queer aspects of many biblical texts. It is an expansive resource and excellent entry into the realm of Queer Theology.

The Widening of God’s Mercy

Biblical scholar Richard Hays, with a lot of help from his son Christopher Hays (a scholar in his own right), attempts to walk back decades of damage done to queer people with this book. Some thing he did not go far enough; however, this book might be helpful for those who once put great faith in Hays’ earlier works. It may also help to open one’s mind to inclusion who has been formed in the Evangelical tradition.

Trans

Transforming

Austen Hartke blends together deep theological and biblical exploration with his own personal stories and those of others. This is an excellent read for trans folks as well as those looking to support them and learn more.

Unclobber

Colby Martin wrote an excellent exploration of the Bible passages that are often used against queer folks, a.k.a. the “clobber passages.” There is now an entire website full of resources (though I still highly recommend the book).

I recommend this book to anyone looking for a way to reconcile the Bible with an affirming and inclusive perspective.
