Resources for LGBTQIA+ Christians

Below are a selection of resources I have found helpful for exploring faith, identity, and self-acceptance as an LGBTQIA+ Christian. Resources that have a specific audience or focus on a specific group of folks are tagged in the top corners of some resources, the rest are just generally good for all.

Beyond Shame

Matthias Roberts names and equips his readers to challenge the shame that they carry in their lives, especially around sex. Whether you’re discerning your sexual ethic or looking to overcome the internalized shame within you, this is an excellent book.

Does Jesus Really Love Me?

Jeff Chu shares the stories from queer Christians (or former Christians) all over the United States. This can be a helpful way of finding affinity with other queer Christians no matter where you are in your journey.

Parents

Embracing the Journey

As parents of a gay son, Greg & Lynn McDonald speak of their journey into becoming affirming parents and supporters of the LGBTQ community. Their journey could be a model for parents learning how to love and embrace their LGBTQIA+ children while also remaining connected to their faith and faith communities.

God and the Gay Christian

In Matthew Vines’ book, which is part memoir and part biblical exploration, we see the heart of truly committed queer Christian. This book is a great resource for integrating faith and sexual identity.

Asexual

Invisible Cake Society

Jenna DeWitt is a friend who does a lot to educate and advocate for aromantic and asexual folks, and queer people in general. This links specifically to her resources and writings connected to the A in LGBTQIA+ and is a great way to learn more about yourself or others who are part of A-spectrum.

One Coin Found

Emmy Kegler explores a familiar text with and writes with fantastic insight learned as a queer Christian called to ministry from a young age. Her thoughts and story are inspiring and provoking. This is a great read for anyone, but especially those who share a complicated history with the Bible and ministry.

Outlove: A Queer Christian Survival Story

Julie Rodgers shares her story of growing up in an Evangelical home that was (mostly) adversarial toward her queer identity, involvement in anti-queer ministries, and eventual liberation from internalized and external homophobia that suppressed her from embracing her full queer self.

Trans

QCF: Trans & Gender-Expansive Identities

A resource from Queer Christian Fellowship, featuring Taj Smith.

The Book of Queer Prophets

In this collection of stories, we will be moved to tears and laughter. We have come a long way, but we have a long way to go. For those who want to go deeper, this is a must read.

Trans

Transforming

Austen Hartke blends together deep theological and biblical exploration with his own personal stories and those of others. This is an excellent read for trans folks as well as those looking to support them and learn more.

Trans

Transgender & Christian

This is a wonderful resource from QueerTheology.

True Inclusion

Brandan Robertson writes a compelling vision of inclusion in the church without ignoring the challenges presented by patriarchy and centuries of church exclusion.

Unashamed: Coming Out Guide for LGBTQ Christians

Amber Cantorna carefully walks through many questions and considerations queer Christians may need to make as they are coming out while part of a Christian community.

Parents

Unconditional: A Guide to Loving and Supporting Your LGBTQ Child

Telaina Erikson writes a wholistic and helpful guide for supporting queer youth and adult children. While some of the specifics are a little outdated (technology changes fast), there are some really good insights here. It is not specifically Christian in nature but she does speak of faith on occasion.
